Orchids on Table Mountain

Table Mountain is renowned worldwide for its diversity of vegetation. Although on some of the lower slopes alien vegetation is prevalent, fynbos is located on the vast majority of Table Mountain. Fynbos is the indigenous vegetation found mainly in the Western Cape. But now, besides the “usual fynbos”, we also now have some wonderful Orchids on Table Mountain.

In the summer months there are many flowering plants including the red disa which is the botanical emblem of the Western Cape. This delicate member of the orchid family usually starts appearing at the end of January and only in specific places. Most commonly close to water or damp areas displays of red abound.

A hike up Table Mountain to the aqueduct is the best option to get a good viewing of these attractive flowers. Allow at least 4 hours for this hike and preferably have a guide so you don’t miss out or take a wrong turn! The reward, most reliably during the month of February, makes the effort worthwhile.

The smaller but equally attractive blue disa also flowers during the month of February. It is more common and you will find it on the upper slopes, peaks and summits with a less dense distribution.
