It is time almost for the annual maintenance of the Table Mountain aerial cable way. This year it is from the 24th July to the 7th of August. Therefore if you arrive during this time and want to get to the top of Table Mountain you must be prepared to hike. The hike down Platteklip Gorge is a steep and stepped path consisting of a few thousand rock steps. It is not easy and it is not for everyone. You can hike up and down Platteklip which is the easiest and shortest option or choose to hike up India Venster or Kasteelspoort. The latter hike would normally take around 6 hours and the other two options around 4 1/2 hours.
So come prepared with a good level of fitness and a strong pair of legs. If possible be flexible in regard to days to hike Table Mountain and have warm clothing and sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Remember you are arriving in Cape Town during the winter. There can be small amounts of snow on top of Table Mountain at this time of year.
Your alternative if the above doesn’t sound like it is for you, is to hike Lions Head instead, about three hours in total and still offering a great hiking experience and great views.
