Fire in Table Mountain National Park

There is currently a widespread fire in Table Mountain National Park, which is ravaging sections of the park, including large parts of upper Tokai Forest and Silvermine Reserve. Table Mountain itself is not effected by the fire or by smoke as the wind is currently mild and from the North. It is being reported that arson is the cause.

The effects of the fire

Although fire is part of the ecology of the indigenous vegetation, this fire is also burning non indigenous species and is threatening residential suburbs. Fortunately so far no destruction of homes has been reported and no fatalities. One firefighter is injured.

Fire is necessary as some species require heat to germinate and it also prevents other species from dominating the landscape. A fire that is as extensive as this one however, is not. A recent controlled burn took place in lower Tokai Forest, incorporating a couple of acres and no non indigenous species. We hope that our brave firefighters will soon contain the flames and our beautiful Table Mountain National Park can recover.

The current situation

The fire in Table Mountain National Park is contained and for the most part extinguished. Fire fighters are continuing to monitor hot spot areas but with the recent rain it seems unlikely to reignite. Certain areas are still off limits to the public in Silvermine Nature Reserve and upper Tokai plantation. However Table Mountain itself is open for business so no problem if you wish to hike with us!

Many roads are closed and access to the southern parts of the Cape Peninsula is restricted. Two major roads are closed, Ou Kaapse Weg, and Boyes Drive.

Spare a thought to the many animals effected by this fire in Table Mountain National Park, including those who will try to flee. The slower moving ones like tortoises wont escape.
