Its been snowing on Table Mountain!

18th September 2013 – 8:32 am

Yes, its true – a covering of snow on top of Table Mountain and even a snowman.  On Friday 30th August three of us set off from Camps Bay to hike up Kasteelspooort and on to the Front Table through the valleys.  Even before the top of Kasteelspoort patches of snow were noticable in the gorge.  Once higher,  the wooden walkways were covered with a layer of fresh snow and quite treacherous to negotiate.  At times we had to abandon them as it was impossible to stay on our feet.
We were well prepared with the right gear, luckily as it was really cold,  just a few degrees above freezing.  It started to snow while ascending from the Valley of Isolation but not to be deterred we soldiered on and arrived at the cableway to be welcomed by Frosty the Snowman!  Visibility was intermittant so without too much delay we got ourselves some hot coffees and ate our sandwiches in the restaurant.  Only one heater was working and it wasnt exactly snug and cosy (hint to the cableway company) but we still enjoyed our lunch and marvelled as the snow fell outside.  Not exactly what you might expect on Table Mountain but just goes to show its a really good thing to be prepared especially in the winter months as you never know what surprise the mountain might spring on you!
